The EIB Institute is proud to announce the closing of the 2nd Social Innovation Tournament, with over 200 applications received. Over 25 million Europeans are out of work. The lack of opportunities in the jobs market is too often exacerbated by gender, age, race or disability. One in six Europeans is at risk of poverty. There are real grounds for concern about child poverty and the social inclusion of children in Europe. The Tournament is one of the ways in which the Bank and the EIB Institute promote innovative solutions that reduce social exclusion in Europe. The breadth and quality of the applications this year has been remarkable, with projects ranging from education and healthcare to new technologies across Europe, highlighting the importance of social innovation in today’s society.
The Screening Committee of EIB Group experts in innovation and other relevant disciplines will now make a start on carefully reviewing all the applications and selecting up to 15 finalists to go through to the second round. The finalists will be announced by 15 June and will be invited to present their proposals at an award ceremony that will take place on 17 October 2013 in Budapest, where a Selection Panel composed of specialists from the academic and business world will identify and name the three winners. All projects will compete for the General Category EUR 25 000 1st Prize and EUR 10 000 2nd Prize. Projects that come under the Special Category of the Environment will also compete for the EUR 25 000 Special Category Prize. Up to two projects, not necessarily prize winners, may receive a voucher entitling the team to benefit from subsequent coaching/mentoring services.
