Housing exclusion is a massive issue in Europe, where one in six households is living in overcrowded homes and one in nine is paying too much relative to its income, said Marc Uhry, from the Fondation Abbé Pierre, a French charity, at a seminar organised by the University of Luxembourg, the EIB Institute and other partners as part of the “Inequality and…” lecture series.
The presentation was based on the first «Overview on housing exclusion in Europe», which the Fondation Abbé Pierre carried out last year with Feantsa. The report explores housing difficulties throughout Europe, with a specific focus on homelessness.
In most European countries, since the year 2000, housing costs have increased faster than households income and the housing burden is becoming heavier and heavier for poor households, especially in countries facing economic difficulties. The number of homeless people has increased everywhere except in two countries, Finland and the Netherlands, which have managed to set up more efficient policies.
