Some 70% of households living in rural areas or urban slums in India do not have access to toilets; roughly 60% of the country’s 1.2 billion people still defecate in the open.
An EIB grant of EUR 3 800 is supporting a project by PADEM, a Luxemburgish NGO, to make clean and safe water available for the inhabitants of Keru, a village located in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, India.
Overall, 25 family tanks as well as 200 basic family sanitary installations (toilets and showers) have been built for the villagers. Training and awareness sessions on hygiene and sanitary education have also been organised with the help of local authorities. Over 1 000 people should benefit from the new installations and from the awareness sessions which will also be disseminated via a pedagogic film and leaflets.
