With 45% of transported goods and 80% of passengers in the EU using roads, road transport is a key element for growth and development. But such traffic implies costly maintenance efforts to preserve, rehabilitate or reconstruct pavement.

So is it economically better to build short lasting roads which will need to be rebuilt early or long lasting ones which will need to be maintained regularly ?

To help road project promoters and road project financiers answer that question, the University of A Coruna in Spain has developed a new model thanks to a STAREBEI grant from the EIB Institute Knowledge Programme.

Using the latest advances in civil engineering, the Dynamic and Maintenance Simulation App (DMSA) can help to define a set of recommendations on how to evaluate different maintenance strategies by road project promoters financed by the EIB.
