The 33 National Promotional Banks in the EU form a heterogeneous universe in terms of their history and size, according to a study conducted by students from four different Masters of Bocconi University under the framework of a capstone project organised by the EIB Institute’s Knowledge Programme.

They are also diverse in terms of the sectors they finance and the financial instruments they use. But they share similarities in their decision making processes, public shareholding and the fact that they are impact driven. Most countries also prefer having a promotional bank acting in diversified areas with a strong bias for climate, SMEs and infrastructure.

This is the second capstone by Bocconi University students in the framework of the agreement signed with the EIB Institute in 2017.
