The Institute is sponsoring the annual conference of the European University Institute‘s Florence School of Banking and Finance on “European financial infrastructure in the face of new challenges” to take place on 25 April 2019 in Florence.

Co organised by the Brevan Howard Centre at Imperial College and BAFFI CAREFIN at Bocconi University, the conference aims to gain a better understanding of the internal and external disruptions that may be putting Europe’s financial system under stress and offer a way forward to address these challenges, in a dialogue between senior academics, policy-makers and private practitioners.

It will assess the challenges to Europe’s and the global payment systems in the context of rising US extra-territorial sanctions and debate what steps could mitigate the costs of sovereign debt crises without raising sovereign yields or exacerbating liquidity risk in the short run. The conference will also ask whether Europe needs a safe asset that helps address challenges from both directions, and how this could be designed.

On 27-28 June, the Institute will support another conference at the Florence School of Banking and Finance on “The new world of financial stability”.
