The EIB has purchased all seven bodies of works created by its 2020 artists in residence under the Artists Development Programme (ADP). These include three works by Panayiotis Doukanaris: A Stroll at the Blue Hour (2020), Uncanny I-V (2020), Uninhabitable terrain (2020); two works by Niamh Schmidtke: Foundations (2020) and Drafting communication, drafting climate, drafting futures (2020); and two bodies of works by Meta Drčar: Frame Series, Work No. 4 (2020) and Frame Series, Work No. 5 (2020).
Niamh Schmidtke (23, Ireland) won the thematic focus residency on “Disruption: The Imprint of Man”; Meta Drčar (34, Slovenia) and Panayiotis Doukanaris (29, Cyprus) won the geographic focus residency.
The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the fourth resident, Niamh Fahy (29, Ireland), selected for the “(De)construction of History” residency, from travelling to Luxembourg. She will join the 2021 ADP cohort. For the same reason, the mentoring session planned in Helsinki with Finnish photographer Jorma Puranen, mentor of the 2020 edition, took place online and the final exhibition of the 2020 ADP works will take place in 2021 in a joint show with the 2021 ADP residents.
Panayiotis developed a unique technique, meticulously removing the threads of canvases that he had previously painted, thereby questioning the traditional relationship between canvas and image. Meta’s installations, made from locally-sourced stone, glass and steel, established parallels between the moving body, sculpture and architectural space. Niamh’s works of art acted to pluralise current conversations about green investment. By creating fictional email chains and rearranging public statistics, she questioned how we can place an economic value on our environment and, if not, what alternatives we are left with.
Learn more about the artists and their works of art in three “Behind the Work” videos produced during the residency: Meta Drčar; Panayiotis Doukanaris; Niamh Schmidtke.
The EIB art collection comprises some 900 works paintings, photographs, works on paper, sculptures, installations and site-specific commissions. It is regularly complemented by works acquired from emerging artists, including works by laureates of the ADP. The ADP is a residency and mentoring programme in Luxembourg offering emerging European visual artists (under the age of 35) the opportunity to develop their practice in a high quality professional context without any material constraints. It involves creating a new (body of) work(s) under the mentoring of an internationally renowned artist.
Calls for application for the ADP 2021 will be launched in late October 2020.
