With grants and donations the Institute plays an active role in supporting humanitarian, cultural and social initiatives.
The EIB Institute organizes donations of IT equipment no longer used by the EIB Group, to non-profit organisations, local community centres or schools registered in an EU country.
In 2016, 23 NGOs were supported by EIB Institute grants, for a total amount of EUR 128 978, and 56 schools and non-profit organisations received donations of 977 desktops, laptops and other IT equipment. This includes the 400 pieces of IT equipment donated as part of the Institute’s cooperation with Close the Gap which takes used IT equipment to African schools helping young people in the countries concerned to improve their educational and economic prospects.
The EIB Institute also make grants for purposes of disaster relief. In 2016, the EIB Institute raised EUR 250 000 for a special donation related to the earthquake in Ecuador and EUR 250 000 to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. This follows two donations made in 2015, one following the earthquake in Nepal and one for refugees coming to Europe.
