On 21 November 2022, the deadliest earthquake to hit Indonesia since 2018 struck near Cianjur in West Java. At least 335 people died, including more than 100 children. The disaster also damaged or destroyed over 500 educational facilities.
The EIB, through the EIB Institute, has donated €250 000 to Save the Children, which will ultimately benefit some 7 500 students and teachers
The funds will be used to provide temporary learning spaces (approximately 20 rooms for use by 4 500 students and 300 teachers); learning materials (boards, stationery, teacher edition textbooks, recreational and sports equipment, etc.); back-to-school kits for around 1 500 students; as well as mental health support for teachers and students, including training for around 150 teachers to give psychosocial support.
The donation activities are expected to be completed by early 2023.
The EIB Institute regularly provides disaster relief grants and donates decommissioned IT equipment from the EIB.
In 2022, its donations supported populations impacted by the floods in Pakistan, the war in Ukraine and the volcanic eruption in Tonga.
