The EIB, the EU’s climate bank, is supporting through the EIB Institute the new Sciences Po European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition launched on 25 November via an international conference.
This is the second university chair supported by the Institute after the first EIB Climate Chair at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, launched earlier this year.
Co-hosted by Sciences Po’s School of Public Affairs (headed by Yann Algan) and Paris School of International Affairs (headed by Enrico Letta), the Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition is resolutely transdisciplinary, seeking to develop integrative thinking to help resolve complex challenges of sustainable development and climate transition.
The Chair is directed by Shiv Someshwar, Associate Professor at Sciences Po and a visiting professor at Columbia University (New York, USA) and builds upon the academic excellence of Sciences Po with its global network of partner universities to promote academic dialogue and make recommendations to current and future policy makers all over the world. The Chairholder is supported by a Scientific Committee which will determine the strategic orientation of research, training, education, and outreach activities annually. The current external members of the Scientific Committee include Prof. Jeffrey Sachs (USA), Prof. Laurence Tubiana (France), Julia Marton-Lefèvre (France), Sunita Narain (India), and Prof. Rizaldi Boer (Indonesia).
The Chair is co-sponsored by the EIB, Hermès, the luxury goods manufacturer, and HSBC.
“This chair illustrates the paramount importance of sustainable development and climate transition especially at a time the world is facing an unprecedented pandemic and its dramatic economic consequences” said Ambroise Fayolle, EIB Vice-President. “The EIB, the EU’s climate bank, is pleased to contribute, through our support and our expertise, to enrich knowledge building and knowledge dissemination on these crucial topics.”
Sciences Po, one of Europe’s leading universities, has been a partner of the Institute since 2015 through its capstones and Summer School programmes.
