Our purpose

The Knowledge Programme aims at channelling support, mainly through grants or sponsorship, to higher education and research activities, particularly in the field of applied economics within Europe.

What we currently do

Through its Universities Research Action initiative the EIB undertakes a number of support activities including,

  • EIBURS, the EIB University Research Sponsorship Programme, which provides grants to EU University Research Centres working on research topics and themes of major interest to the Bank.
  • STAREBEI, STAges de REcherche BEI, a programme for financing young researchers working on joint EIB-University projects.
  • EIB University Networks, a sponsoring mechanism for university networks, focused on areas of interest to the EIB.
  • Cooperation with UniLu: Under the MoU, various actions link the EIB Group to the University of Luxembourg, including the European Studies Library established in 2010.
  • EIB-ERSA: The EIB sponsors the annual EIB-ERSA prize in Regional Science which
recognizes the outstanding contributions of scholars to the advancement of science in Luxembourg and Europe.
  • Knowledge-sharing by EIB staff and retirees: many EIB Group staff and retirees are invited to speak at conferences, lectures, and seminars as well as writing articles, or holding university classes.
